Westminster 2021 was a historic event for many reasons. For the first time, due to the Covid pandemic, Westminster was not held in Manhattan at Madison Square Garden. Instead the show was held outdoors at Lyndhurst Castle in Tarrytown, New York on June 12-13, 2021, delayed from February in New York City. For our Barbet breed, it was the first time we were invited to the show!
Westminster pre-dates the American Kennel Club, the invention of the lightbulb, and is the second longest continuously running sports event in the States. Westminster survived through world wars and now covid. The top five champions of a dog breed automatically get an invitation to show at Westminster. This is determined by points accumulated the prior year. Once those spots are filled, eligible champions can apply for the lottery to win a coveted spot to the show, filling the remaining slots of the 2500 maximum.
For 2021, there were six Barbet entered, including one from Canada. Those six Barbet and their handlers/owners came together on a breezy sunny morning on June 13, 2021 to show under judge Mr. David L. Kittredge. Mr. Kittredge opened the Barbet ring judging by welcoming us and congratulating us on being at Westminster. All of the exhibitors could not help breaking out into big grins!
There were cameras, press and photos taken. The winners were selected, and congratulations shared. It was one for the memory books. The winners are listed above. A hearty congratulations to everyone, including those who worked for the breeds recognition, board members, and club members who volunteered through the years.
