Want a Barbet?

Interested in bringing your own Barbet home? Please remember this is an lesser known breed and breeders will not have puppies readily available.

The few US breeders do not breed for quantity or to meet the demand. Wait time can be upwards of 1-2+ years or more. Barbet are worth the wait!

Choosing a responsible breeder

Choosing the “right” Barbet breeder is an individual choice based on your goals, puppy availability, recommendations, etc.  Ideally, you will have a relationship with the breeder for the life of your dog.  The AKC Responsible Breeder Fact page includes Breeder Interview Questions to help you with the process. Talk with several breeders and and for their references.

BCA Breeder Standards

The Barbet Club of America has enlisted high standards for the breeders listed on the club website, and regular checks are made to ensure that breeders are meeting these voluntary requirements. To be listed on the Barbet Club of America website as a Breeder, each breeder has submitted a signed agreement stating:

  • They are a member in good standing with the club for a minimum of one year.

  • They follow BCA health recommendations for testing of breeding dogs: OFA or PennHIP Hips and Elbows, Exam by Board Certified Ophthalmologist, DNA test for prcd PRA. Results are listed publicly on OFA website or appropriate foreign database. PRA carrier x carrier breedings are strongly discouraged.

  • Breeds sound and healthy dogs.

  • All US born litters and individual puppies must be registered with the AKC.

  • All past and current litter information with full kennel names is submitted, updated, and public on the Pawpeds pedigree database. To submit information: stacybrogan@gmail.com

  • Permanently identify puppies with microchip or tattoo so all dogs can be traced to their breeding program.

  • Agree to take back or help rehome any dog they have bred that comes into our rescue or needs another placement

  • Provide guidance to their puppy families and encourage them to join our club.

  • Breeders listing will be in the state they reside in.

  • No puppies will be offered for sale to pet stores, mail order houses, catalog sales, live auctions, contest sponsors or raffles, etc. Puppies should be personally sold to their permanent home.

  • Participate in our club through Meet the Breeds events, submitting articles for the newsletter, holding Board or Committee positions, volunteering to assist with club events, etc.

  • Follows the AKC Code of Sportsmanship.

  • The BCA does not recommend specific Barbet breeders. It is the buyer’s responsibility to research and select a breeder of his/her choice.

  • Reputable breeders present their animals using registered names and show photos, AKC titles,  and links to health results.

AKC Marketplace does not verify statements made by breeders. Unfortunately there are puppies erroneously listed as fulfilling our club breeding standards.
